Cut Block Mold Making Technique for Complicated and Fragile Parts

Once again ComposiMold proves its user friendliness...

Not only can you see through the material to be sure you are liking how your molds and casts are coming out, but you can also work with fragile and complicated parts by cutting the mold with a sharp clean knife.

In this example of the "cut block" technique you will see how we made a cut down a center parting line of our master object to be able to remove it from the cooled mold. We left a large portion of the mold intact so it will line back up with we make our casting.

We wanted to be sure that we casted the tail of this little lion and that it didn't break when we removed the fragile chocolate version. It was a success!

Don't be afraid to cut the mold, tape it back together if needed, and make your casts. We don't call ComposiMold user friendly for nothing!

Sharon Stiegler Uses ComposiMold-FC to Create Edible Masterpieces

We first met Sharon Stiegler at a cake show during which she purchased ComposiMold. At this year's Great American Cake Show in Westminster, Maryland we were again greeted by Sharon and her enthusiasm and excitement spread throughout the hall as she shared her latest cake and decorating ideas, all made using molds created with ComposiMold. She graciously shared her ComposiMold molds she made using a plastic grenade, real bullets, and wooden bowling balls and pins.

Her creations were absolutely amazing and we envied those lucky folks who were able to sample the chocolate confections. Sharon's cake at the show gave us new molding ideas; she used nuts and bolts as well as gears to make the decorations on her cake. The gorgeous butterflies on her cake were so realistic, it required close inspection to ascertain that they were not real! We want to thank Sharon for sharing her cakes and molds, her molding support, and allowing us to make posters using some of her decorations. Thank you Sharon; see you at the next show! -Bobbi

Cast Chocolate and then Soap in the Same Mold

There are few mold making supplies as versatile as ComposiMold. We are always touting it's reusability as it's most beneficial feature. However when you consider that ComposiMold can handle such a range of casting materials from concrete to fondant, you'll be convinced that it's the only mold making tool you'll need in your supply closet!

This week I will demonstrate that in the very same mold I can cast chocolates, wipe away any sweet debris, and then cast glycerin soaps from the same mold! (Note: you would not want to cast these two materials in the opposite order...remember, chocolate first! And as soon as I cast a non food item in my ComposiMold-FC it can only be used for casting non-food items in the future.)

I wiped the excess chocolate debris off my mold with a wet paper towel. Be sure to dry it right away because ComposiMold biodegrades in water.

I used food coloring and essential oils in my white glycerin soap.

Yellow and red make orange!

However all the colors makes some kind of purple...

Here are the soaps de-molded next to the original parts.

As you can see here, this one mold was used to cast both chocolate shapes and soap shapes. Thanks to ComposiMold's versatility I can do that!

What kid wouldn't want to take a tub with these soaps shaped like their play toys?
Remember, this was just a demonstration of how versatile ComposiMold is. Be careful not to use edible casting materials AFTER you use a non food items as casting materials. Keep your ComposiMold-FC and ComposiMold-LT seperate.

Happy Mold-Making! Michelle

Make Your Own Chocolate Casts of Childrens Toys

This time of year really challenges my inner gift-giver. For a couple weeks in November I am struck with this fear that there's absolutely no way I could possibly top the gifts I found or made for my people last year. Never fear though, by early December I am fully inspired and ready for round 2!

This year, with ComposiMold in my pocket, I am making solid chocolate casts of my son's wooden toy collection. They'll be perfect cupcake toppers, cake decorations, and perfectly suitable as a candy right out of the tin. You'll see in this demonstration that I made a ComposiMold of a  kangaroo, a gator, and a dear. These three will live happily together in their little Holiday tin until Christmas morning...unless my husband finds them first!

These guys are secured to the bottom of my mold bow with small balls of clay.

What kind of objects are laying on your living room floor that would make great molds?

Be sure to cool your mold in the refrigerator before you pour hot chocolate into it AND after to cool the casts quicker.

Here they are ready to be presented to one lucky family member!

  Happy Mold-Making! Michelle

ComposiMold-FC First Timer Falls in Love

We always love sharing first timer's experiences with our blog followers. It's educational to read about someone else's trials, errors, and impressive final results. In the following post you will learn how one teacher taught herself to use ComposiMold-Food Contact and now has ComposiMold fever!

"Let me start by saying I teach; that's my forte, teaching.  I work with seventh and eighth graders on language arts and social studies. I am no baker.

Baking a cake means opening a Betty Crocker box, adding 3 ingredients, and BAM!  (I do manage a pretty good buttercream frosting on my own however.)  This is the background needed for you to understand my reluctance to try molding unique chocolates with ComposiMold. I procrastinated for a week before I plugged in my country music and pulled out the molding materials.

There were a few trial and error attempts.  First, I did not know that I had to attach the item I wanted to mold to the bottom of my container.  My pumpkin floated to the top as I poured ComposiMold over it.  Lesson learned!  Secondly, and in retrospect an obvious blunder on my part, wood items such as the wooden anchor I used, requires a food safe mold release. Wood is very porous and it took some elbow grease to get it out of my mold.  My anchor came out well without using the coating, but I would apply it in the future.  My only other admission is that I was prone to lapping the chocolate from the spoon once I filled the molds.

So to my amazement, the entire process is simple and, even better, therapeutic and relaxing.  I totally enjoyed the experience.  Granted I am no artist nor cake decorator nor professional molder.  Yet my results were adequately impressive for having never tried it before.  I created some neat chocolate creations that I put on cakes over the course of the week.  Yes, my peers at school love me—cakes all week in the staff room.

A decision has already been made that everyone I know will be receiving unique chocolates from me for the holidays.  I am thinking of molding soap as well.  ComposiMold has created a monster!  I now go into stores and find myself thinking, “ah, that would be a great item to mold and use on a cake!" My advice to any folks reluctant to try ComposiMold: try it, you'll really enjoy it.”  What is even better is that the molding material is reusable time and time again.  ~Bobbi"

Cake Kakoots in Port Barre, Louisiana Uses ComposiMold

We love sharing our customers' unique creations with you. In the photographs below you'll see how a nurse-gone-cake-maker uses ComposiMold-FC (food contact) to create molds of a variety of objects to decorate her realistic cakes. We were quite impressed with her work and happy to hear that ComposiMold saves her money and kitchen space!

Here's what Cake Kakoots had to say about her new business and how ComposiMold works for her:

"I'm Cake Kakoots from Port Barre, Louisiana. I started doing cakes one year ago. I have become pretty busy. I quit my nursing job to start this lil' business. I hope it takes off soon! Thanks to y'alls reusable mold material I save a ton of money. I wouldn't be able to make all the different molds out of silicone; it would be too expensive and take up too much space when not in use." ~ CK

Thanks Cake Kakoots! Best of luck to you and your new business! ~Michelle
