Make Your Own Soft Bait Fishing Lures with Mold Making and Casting

Now you can make your own lures. Mix and match heads, bodies, and tails to create the perfect lure for your angling needs. Then make a mold of your unique lure shape and cast with the included Soft Bait Rubber. The mold Putty is re-usable, so melt your mold and make as many different shaped lures as you want.
To start making your own soft bait lures, you can use the shapes we provide, but when you’re ready you can expand into almost any shape.
Supplies Included:
  •  ImPRESSive Putty (You Press it over your objects to mold…get it? And it’s re-usable for dozens of molds. Impressive, we know.)
  •  2 part fishing lure Soft Bait Rubber (non-PVC based). Enough rubber for up to 20 rubber lures
  •  9 interchangeable fishing lure pieces for over 50 unique lure shapes.
  •  Gloves, stir sticks, mixing cups, and instructions.

MIX AND MATCH HEADS, BODIES, AND TALES FOR 50 COMBINATIONS OF CUSTOM SOFT BAIT FISHING LURES

MAKE THE LURE SHAPE AND MOLD
  1. Create a truly unique lure by choosing one head, body, and tail from the included shapes. You can make your lure longer by using 2 body pieces instead of 1.
  2. Use a dot of hot glue to hold each one together. Scrape away any hot glue along the seam.
  3. Heat the ImPRESSive Putty in the microwave in 15 sec. intervals until dough-like with no lumps.
  4. CAUTION HOT: Let stand for 10 minutes until temperature is comfortable to handle.
  5. Place your glued shape on a flat surface and PRESS the ImPRESSive putty onto the shape.
  6. Let Putty cool at room temperature until firm to the touch or 15 minutes in the freezer.
  7. Remove original shape by flexing the Putty away from it and pulling it out.
CAST THE LURE, then Cast your lure.
  1. Thoroughly mix Part A and Part B of Soft Bait Rubber in equal portions by volume.
  2. If you choose, you can add any dyes, fillers, glitters, scents at this time. IDEA: Add crushed up pieces of Styrofoam to decrease weight of lure or add dry sand to make it more dense. Resin Colorants and Glow In The Dark Powder sold separately.
  3. Wipe any Activator off the inside of the mold with a paper towel or cloth before pouring your Soft Bait Rubber in.
  4. Pour your Soft Bait Rubber into the mold until it is flush with the top of the mold. Tap mold gently to release any air bubbles.
  5. Let the resin cure in the mold for 5-10 minutes or until rubbery to the touch.
  6. Flex the mold away from the casting to remove your one-of-a-kind soft bait fishing lure.
  7. Try it out…Go fishing.

CAST MULTIPLE LURES OR RE-MAKE YOUR LURE SHAPE
You might want to make a couple of the same lure just in case your neighbor decides to help himself to your prize winning lure. So repeat the casting process above to create multiple lures in that configuration.
OR
Break the lure shapes apart by slicing through the cooled hot glue. Scrape the cooled hot glue off of the pieces and rearrange them into a totally different lure configuration. Re-Melt the ImPRESSive Putty mold and repeat the process of creating your mold and castings.
SAFETY: ImPRESSive Putty is hot when melted and can burn. DO NOT handle straight out of the microwave. Let it stand until cool enough to handle comfortably. ImPRESSive Putty is not certified for use with edible materials. Leaking Activator from Putty can stain furniture. Store in an airtight container. Intended for ages 10 and up. Do not eat the Putty.
Soft Bait Rubber:  The soft casting rubber is a two part silicone casting resin with very low hardness (Shore D of 5) formulated to attract really good looking and big fish. While still in liquid form, the Soft Bait Rubber should be kept away from your skin. Use gloves. Do not eat or drink.
Please do not litter. Please do not leave your rubber lures in the water or fish. The lures are not biodegradable.

Make Edible Legos with Jello and ComposiMold-FC

Make a mold of your Lego bricks and then pour jello into them. They even stack together like real Legos! When you are done playing...eat them!

https://youtu.be/HA6U5u56y1I

Here are 3 tips to set you up for success when making jello castings in a ComposiMold mold!

TIP #1: Be sure to use 1/2 the amount of water asked for in the instructions. This will make a firmer jello Lego so it'll hold up to de-molding from your mold and lots of Lego stacking play!

TIP #2: Be sure to spray the inside of your ComposiMold mold with a food safe mold release before pouring the liquid jello.

TIP #3: Let the liquid jello cool way down before pouring. Also cool the mold before pouring liquid jello.

Let us know if you try this project! We'd love to hear about it and see pictures too!

The Science of Mold Making: What Makes ComposiMold Different

Mold making is the process used to duplicate three dimensional models. Through the use of a mold making material a negative of a model part is made. That negative can be used to cast a second part that is the exact same as the original part in size and shape. The same mold can be used to make many duplicates of the original model parts.

The term reusable mold is used as a way to describe the ability to remelt and reuse the same mold making material for many different and unique molds.

Typical mold making materials such as latex, silicone, and polyurethane have several drawbacks for certain applications:
  • Current mold making materials can only make one mold. That mold can be used many times, but when you are finished making duplicates of your sculpture or artwork, the mold is no longer useful.
  • These one-use molds are difficult to fix if you make mistakes because the material does not stick to itself or leaves markings where the patching has occurred.
  • Current mold making materials are also expensive and priced out of reach for most potential mold makers, especially beginner mold makers.
ComposiMold works by melting the material to form a hot liquid. This liquid is used to make moulds for casting duplicate parts of an original component. When melted, this low viscosity polymeric material pours over, brushes on, pours in, or covers an original component. The mold making material cools as the heat leaves the material into the surrounding environment. Once the model part is removed, this flexible mold material is used to make duplicates of the original part. ComposiMold is compatible with: plasters, waxes, soaps, concrete, plastics, edible materials and many more. The number of castings you can create in each mold varies based on type of casting material and how complicated your mold is. Then...simply remelt the mold making material to reuse it for over 35 different model parts.

The Science of Why We Can Pour Hot Casting Materials into Cold ComposiMold

Making a mold with ComposiMold is easy. Simply, bring the temperature of ComposiMold above 135 F and pour! To solidify, just cool to room temperature.

Due to thermoconductivity, you can still use casting materials in this mold that are above 135 F and they won't destroy your mold. Rubbers, such as ComposiMold, have low thermoconductivity. This means it takes longer for the heat to travel from hot casting materials into the ComposiMold mold. The hot materials will set up before heating the ComposiMold.

You can actually pour casting materials into ComposiMold up to about 180 F even though ComposiMold melts at about 135 F. You can do this by chilling the ComposiMold mold first. For example, beeswax makes a great candle, but it melts at 145 F, so you need to cool the.ComposiMold mold by placing the mold in the refrigerator or freezer and then pouring in the melted beeswax.

So by chilling the ComposiMold, it takes much longer for the mold's temperature to reach its melting point. However, if you chill it to 30 F, it must heat up over 100 degrees before it melts.

The casting material, such as the wax or soap, only has to drop its temperature a few degrees before it begins to solidify. Also, waxes and soaps cool from the outside to the inside (unlike metals that cool from inside/out). So as they cool you create a barrier of wax that also helps protect the ComposiMold.

Be sure to chill the mold prior to each casting made. This will ensure that your mold doesn't get destroyed and that your mold making and casting experience is a success.

Little Mermaid Character Soaps

You too can turn any children's toy into a real functional piece of soap! We think this is a great way to get a dirty kid clean! It's easy to do with ComposiMold-Original or ComposiMold-Flex.

In this video we use ComposiMold-Original, Vegetable Oil Mold Release, Bubble Buster, and White Glycerin Soap that we add a few drops of colorant to.

Tip: Be sure to hot glue your original toy to your heat safe mold box so it does not float when you pour the melted ComposiMold over it. We've made this mistake too many times not to mention it to you again!

Thanks for watching! The ComposiMold Team

Minnie Mouse Birthday Candle

One of the best features of ComposiMold, Reusable Mold Making Material, is that it is transparent. You can easily see your original object through the mold. If the shape of your part is a little too complicated to pull right out of the mold, you can make some cuts down the side. These are called parting lines and they can be strategically placed to run down the sides or back of your final figurine.

When making your parting lines, be sure to leave a portion of the mold intact so the parts of the mold that have been cut can easily line back up when you are on to making your castings later.

You can see in this video we made of a Minnie Mouse Birthday Candle, that we cut the mold 2 times, thus creating a faux 3 part mold. It's easy to line the cut pieces back together to apply tape. This method makes it super easy to pull the delicate candle out of the mold as soon as the Soy Candle Wax is cooled and complete!

Enjoy!

ComposiMold as Rubber Casting Material for Biodegradable Fishing Lures

I think we've got a bite!

You can use ComposiMold as a biodegradable rubber casting material to use as a fishing lure! We simply added 3 Tablespoons of cornmeal and some food coloring to the melted ComposiMold and poured it into our ReMold Putty mold.

Now we can add a hook and we've got ourselves a winning fishing lure that will slowly dissolve in water. This means, you will not be harming the environment if your lure gets away...just like the last "big one" did...

Cut Block Mold Making Technique for Complicated and Fragile Parts

Once again ComposiMold proves its user friendliness...

Not only can you see through the material to be sure you are liking how your molds and casts are coming out, but you can also work with fragile and complicated parts by cutting the mold with a sharp clean knife.

In this example of the "cut block" technique you will see how we made a cut down a center parting line of our master object to be able to remove it from the cooled mold. We left a large portion of the mold intact so it will line back up with we make our casting.

We wanted to be sure that we casted the tail of this little lion and that it didn't break when we removed the fragile chocolate version. It was a success!

Don't be afraid to cut the mold, tape it back together if needed, and make your casts. We don't call ComposiMold user friendly for nothing!

Use Organic Objects From Nature to Make Your Mold

There are plenty of objects to make molds of in the natural world. In this video you will see Stan make a mold and cast of a flower bud. We have also used tree bark, acorns, pinecones, leaves, rocks, and more.

An important lesson you will learn in this video is that anchoring your natural found object to the bottom of your mold box is very important. If the object is very light it will float to the top of your melted ComposiMold. You can easily fish it out and start over, but taking the time in the beginning will save you time and frustration in the end!

How to Use a Wallpaper Scrap to Make a Fondant Cake Wrap Texture

Easily transfer interesting textures onto the side of your cake with a ComposiMold mold. In this example, we used a scrap piece of textured wall paper to make our mold.

1. Glue the entire back side of the paper to a perfectly flat heat safe mold box. (You can make any shape and depth mold box with tin foil.) Be sure the surface you are resting the mold on is level and perfectly flat.

2. Coat the textured paper and inside of the mold box with Food Contact Safe Mold Release. Wipe away any excess.

3. Melt ComposiMold-FC (food contact) per instructions on the lid. Do not let it boil, as this will introduce too many bubbles.

4. Pour the ComposiMold-FC into your mold box to cover the paper by at least 1/2".

5. Let the mold cool and solidify on the flat surface.

6. Pull the mold away from the tin foil and then remove the wallpaper from the mold.

7. Trim any rough edges of the mold with a clean knife or kitchen scissors.

8. Soften your fondant and press it into the mold. Using a rolling pin eliminates the added heat of your fingers which may warp your fondant casting.

9. Trim the edges of your fondant cake wrap and apply to the cake.

10. You can also pick up details in the mold to decorate the top and sides of the cake.

The possibilities are endless. You can find textures to mold everywhere you look. If you are not able to put the texture you want to duplicate into a mold box due to it's location, you can use a different method called: the Brush On Method. This allows you to brush melted ComposiMold onto a texture in place. One example is an instance where we wanted to duplicate a flower detail on the back of a lawn chair. After washing the plastic chair with soap and hot water we followed the steps to create a mold with this technique. Then we were able to make white chocolate castings in this mold. See how the possibilities are endless?!

Turn a Glass Swan Into a Plastic Swan with ComposiMold

In today's project we used a glass swan figurine to make our own plastic figurine by using Clear Casting Plastic and a ComposiMold mold. Clear Casting Plastic is our jewelry grade, epoxy resin, that looks just like glass when it's cured. It is super easy to use too! Simply, mix Part A and Part B in equal proportions, by weight or volume, and pour it into your ComposiMold mold.

The supplies used for this project were:
ComposiMold-Original
Vegetable Oil Mold Release
Bubble Buster
Clear Casting Plastic our awesome Epoxy Resin
and a glass figurine of a swan

Remember: Thoroughly mixing this Epoxy Resin is very important. Be sure to scrape the sides of the cup to incorporate ALL material. Pouring slowly into your mold also decreases likelihood of bubbles forming in your final piece.
