Urethane Resin Casting for Awesome Molds

Use either ComposiMold or ImPressive Putty for Urethane castings.

Many people use urethane resins because of their versatility and relatively simple use. Most urethane casting materials are 1:1 mixes with short casting times ranging from 1 to 30 minutes. Urethane plastics are used for making models, prototypes, crafts, and art pieces.

Quick tip for success with urethane casting resins and ComposiMold:
With ImPRESSive Putty, faster cure urethane casting resins work really well. The mold making putty can handle the higher temperatures of the fast cure urethanes. 

For ComposiMold, choose a urethane with a longer cure time. These create less heat as they cure. You can also experiment with freezing the mold prior to pouring higher temperature urethane resins. Be sure to use talc powder/baby powder as your mold release before each casting made.

ComposiMold works very well with many urethane resins. However, there are two potential issues with some urethanes:
  • Some fast cure urethanes create a lot of heat when they cure, which can melt the ComposiMold. You can work around this by chilling your mold first, adding fillers into the urethane before casting, or pouring the resin in intervals.
  • Some urethanes are very sensitive to moisture. Use talcum powder as a mold release to reduce any moisture from the mold from reacting with the urethane.
  • Use a mold release that is designed for polyurethane casting.

ComposiMold has two urethane resins available that we believe work very well with ComposiMold:

Urethane resins require dry fillers. Any water will create bubbles and heat. If you using powdered fillers in the polyurethane, dry the material in the oven at low temperatures for 15 to 30 minutes prior to mixing.

Ten Most Compatible Casting Materials with ComposiMold

Here are some quick tips for the variety of casting materials you can use in a ComposiMold mold:
EPOXIES: Epoxy Resins, Putty, or Clay
Epoxies work well for pieces up to 8 cubic inches. For larger castings of 8+ cubic inches, choose epoxies with longer cure times of 24+ hours. Experiment with freezing the mold prior to pouring epoxy resins that create a lot of heat during curing. Epoxy resins that require an added heat source for curing are not recommended.

Try our jewelry grade, crystal clear, Clear Casting Plastic for castings up to 6 cubic inches. Chill the mold for castings up to 20 cubic inches.

URETHANE OR POLYURETHANE:
Choose a urethane with a longer cure time. These create less heat as they cure. You can also experiment with freezing the mold prior to pouring higher temperature urethane resins. Be sure to use talc powder/baby powder as your mold release before each casting made.

SILICONE:
Silicones work great in ComposiMold molds. Make castings with both platinum or tin cured silicone rubbers.

PLASTER/CONCRETE:
Mix plaster and water together in a 72 parts plaster to 28 parts water, by weight, or to a toothpaste-like consistency. Traditional plasters cure well but leave a slight soft layer on the outside of the casting. To avoid this, apply a layer of Plaster Release to the mold before pouring casts. Fast curing masonry cements work great and cure extremely strong. Follow instructions for mixing ratios.

Try our ComposiStone formulation! It’s smooth like plaster but hard as concrete. It works very well in a ComposiMold mold.

SOAPS:
Shea Butter and Glycerine Soap make great soaps! Chill the mold prior to pouring any higher temperature soaps (above 140ºF).

WAXES: (for candle molds or encaustic casting)
Soy, Paraffin, Beeswax, and Melted Crayons work really well. Chill the mold first for higher temperature waxes (above 140ºF).

Try our all natural Soy Candle Wax for candle making and beautiful wax castings. Cools to a white, creamy finish!

CLAYS:
Use any type of polymer clay, modeling clay, putty, or real clay for push molding in a ComposiMold. Do not use clay in a slurry form or the water will degrade the mold.

CHOCOLATE:
Pour or pipe many types of melted chocolate into your mold. Lightly tap or vibrate the mold to release air bubbles in the chocolate. No mold release is necessary for chocolates.

FONDANT:
Press softened fondant into your mold with your hands or a rolling pin and remove immediately. No mold release is necessary for fondant.

When casting edible treats, you can also use: no-rise cookie dough recipes, gummies, gum paste, ice, butter, and more!

Which ComposiMold Reusable Mold Making Material Should You Use?

Let's make one thing clear! We do not want to confuse you! Currently, ComposiMold comes in four heat-and-pour varieties and we've just released a putty version too! So which one do you choose when it's time to make your project? It depends on your preferred casting materials or your preferred casting technique. Here's a quick guide to help you find the right material for you!

Casting Materials

If you'd rather use a material that you can press onto your master object, instead of pouring over your master object, choose ReMold Putty. How to Make Custom Beads to Create Bracelet, Anklets, Necklaces and other Jewelry

Today we used ComposiMold and Clear Casting Plastic to create an elephant necklace. 
·         Hot glue the elephant to the bottom of a container.

·         Spray the elephant with Bubble Buster.

·         Melt and pour the ComposiMold.

·         Demold the elephant.

·         Measure and mix clear casting plastic resin.

·         Add color to the resin.

·         Pour the resin into the mold, and guide trapped bubbles out of the mold.

·         Allow the resin to cure, and then de-mold.

·         Make more!

·         Drill a hole in the duplicated elephants.

·         String the elephants to create a necklace.

In Today's ComposiMold mold making project we use the reusable mold making material, ReMold Putty to make unique Bear, Dolphin, ram, shark, and other animal beads. We then used the beads to make cool stylish bracelet jewelry.

ComposiMold Figurines Molded with ComposiCast Urethane Casting Material



Tiny rabbits. Nice and simple mold and casting. This was a simple little rabbit placed into a small cup. The melted ComposiMold was poured over top and allowed to solidify. Because it was a small mold, it took about an hour to cool. The mold was sprayed with a mold release and the ComposiCast urethane resin was poured into the cavity. Ten minutes later the first rabbit was removed.

 
This little guy was a character from my youth. He is about an inch tall. The process for making him was basically the same as the rabbit. The mold was with ComposiMold and the urethane was ComposiCast.

See no evil-Urethane Frogs cast with ComposiCast



Here are three frogs that were made with ComposiCast urethane resin. These pieces are approximately 7 inches high and about 3 inches in diameter.

Three different mold making techniques were used.

The first consisted of simply placing the original frog casting into a container and pouring ComposiMold around it. After the ComposiMold solidified by cooling, Urethane resin was poured in. The urethane is the ComposiCast resin sold through ComposiTherm.com. Because of the large size, the urethane heated up and partially melted the ComposiMold. The part still worked, but the mold was only good for one cast.

In the second approach. ComposiMold was brushed on to the original frog figurine. After about 1/2 inch around the part, it was peeled off. The urethane was poured in small amounts and allowed to cure. Because smaller amounts were used, it did not melt the ComposiMold mold making material.

The third method combined ComposiMold with a silicone brush-on material. Two layers of silicone brush-on material was used to coat the frog. Because the brush-on material is not stiff enough to hold its shape without a backing material, ComposiMold was poured around the part. The original part was removed and urethane was poured into the mold (consisting of a thin layer of silicone and about an inch thick ComposiMold). Latex or urethane rubber could also have been used for the brush-on material.

Fixing a Music Microphone Holder with ComposiMold

 
This broken piece was used to hold a microphone to the microphone stand. You can see where it broke in the picture above. Looks like a job for ComposiMold. I held the two pieces together using glue.  Placed the part in a container, sprayed on a mold release, and poured on the ComposiMold. 

Unfortunately, it did not work that easy the first time. The part floated to the surface. So, I pulled the broken microphone holder piece out of the ComposiMold and remelted the ComposiMold. This time, I poured a little of the reusable mold making material onto the bottom of the container and placed the piece into the ComposiMold. I then let this portion cool and solidify. I poured more melted ComposiMold over the top. After letting the mold solidify by cooling, I removed the original part.  I added a touch more mold release to the mold just in case. 

ComposiCast urethane resin was poured into the mold cavity. In about an hour, I removed the part and cleaned it up a bit. I now had a new microphone holder made from ComposiCast in a ComposiMold mold.

ComposiMold Mold Making and ComposiCast Urethane-Fisherman Figurine




The old man fisherman was a nice little figurine to mold and cast. The ComposiMold mold was made the same way as most other molds. The man was placed in a container and the melted ComposiMold was poured over his head. After it cooled. The new ComposiCast resin was used. About 20 grams of part 1 was mixed with 20 grams of part 2 of the urethane casting material. After about a minute of mixing, it was poured into the mold. 

Now he has a fishing partner.
